The Dominican Republic is the top Caribbean destination for tourists from the USA and Canada. The coast line is lined with palms and is home to the largest concentration of hotel rooms in the world. These natives resided in small family groups and were serene and friendly. When Columbus arrived on the island there were approximately 400.000 Indians. Columbus was surprised of the sophisticated level of organization of the Tainos, who had been organized in 5 larger tribes. However most of the Tainos died shortly after the arrival of the Spanish due to the strange diseases brought from Europe.
